Excerpt from Physical Significance of Entropy or of the Second Law

This article is intended for those students of engineering who already have some elementary knowledge of thermodynamics. It is intended to clear up a difficulty that has beset every earnest beginner of this subject. The difficulty is not one of application to engineering problems, although here too there have been widespread misconceptions,1 for the expressions developed by clausius are simple, have long been known and much used by engineers and physicists. The difficulty is rather as to the ultimate physical meaning of entropy. This term has long been known as a sort of property of the state of the body, has long been surmised to be of essentially a statistical nature, but with it all there was a sense that it was a sort of mathematical fiction, that it was somehow unreal and elusive, so it is no wonder that in certain engineering quarters it was dubbed the ghostly quantity.

Physical Significance of Entropy or of the Second Law Classic Reprint J F Klein Books

If you are interested in the history of how Entropy or the Second Law of Thermodynamics was understood in 1910 this is a good book to read. I would have given it another star except that the Kindle version is an OCR optical character transliteration of the original, and it has quite a few mistakes and missed out areas, especially in the mathematical expressions, but thankfully there are not really much mathematics in the book, and that makes it quite nice to read.

The book was published in 1910 by Joseph Klein (1849 – 1918), an American mechanical engineer, and in 1910 he was associated with Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. At the time Klein wrote the book, the concept of atoms as being real had just recently been accepted by the scientific community. A paper written by Einstein on Brownian motion in 1905 convinced most of the skeptics that atoms actually exist. The belief that atoms are real, a the philosophical view called Realism, was opposed by some scientists who believed atoms do not exist because they could not be observed and were just a convenient construct that helped to model the real measurable observables. Boltzmann struggled mightily with these competing philosophies; he believed atoms really do exist but he had to couch his writings so as not to offend the Empiricists in order to get his ideas out in the scientific world. It is thought that this inner conflict led to his eventual suicide on September 5, 1906.

The book has one of the best explanations of entropy, and reversible and irreversible processes that I have seen. It is a real gem and is worth the read, and especially you get an appreciation of how far science has come in a short 100 years since it was written.
